Terms of use

Margo is published by Burrow Studio. By downloading or using it you agree to these terms and to Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which applies to every app distributed through the App Store and is incorporated here by reference. Where Apple’s agreement and these terms disagree, these terms govern the points they specifically address, and Apple’s governs everything else. You must be old enough to enter a contract where you live, and at least 13.

You get a personal, non-transferable licence to use Margo on Apple devices you own or control. The app and its contents stay the property of Burrow Studio.

Your journal is yours. Burrow Studio claims no ownership of what you record, what you write, or what the app writes from your words. Nothing you say is used to train an AI model.

Do not use Margo to:

• record anyone without their knowledge where the law requires their consent, which is your responsibility and not something the app can check for you,
• produce or store material that is illegal where you are,
• break, probe, overload, or work around the app’s limits, including the free-tier limits,
• resell, redistribute, or run the service on behalf of other people as a product of your own,
• reverse engineer the app except where the law says you may.

Accounts that do these things can be suspended or closed. If an account is closed for one of these reasons, no refund is due.

Margo has a free tier and a paid tier called Plus. The free tier includes the first entry of every day, plus 15 extra entries per calendar month, recordings up to 3 minutes, and creations on 3 entries in total. The companion, reminders, streaks, and the weekly letter are free. Plus removes the entry limit, allows recordings up to 12 minutes and creations on every entry, and adds translation, writing the journal in a different language, and audio file import.

• Plus is sold as an auto-renewing subscription through the App Store. The price is shown in the app and in the App Store before you confirm, in your local currency.
• Payment is charged to your Apple account when you confirm the purchase.
• The subscription renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of the period.
• You manage and cancel subscriptions in your Apple account settings, not inside Margo. Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
• Where a free trial is offered, any unused part of it is forfeited if you buy a subscription before the trial ends.
• Prices can change. If a price changes, Apple notifies you and asks you to agree before the next renewal is charged.
• Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it with Apple.

Refunds are handled by Apple, under Apple’s policies. Burrow Studio cannot issue a refund for an App Store purchase and cannot overrule Apple’s decision on one.

Margo uses automated systems to turn what you said into a journal entry, to sort it, to pull out to-dos, to write the one remark or question it leaves you, and to write the weekly letter. These systems are useful and they are also imperfect.

• An entry can misread you. Names, numbers, dates, and technical terms are the usual casualties. Check anything that matters.
• A to-do the app extracted can be wrong or missing. It is a convenience, not a record.
• The question Margo asks, and the weekly letter, are prompts to think, nothing more. They are not advice, and they are not medical, legal, financial, or professional guidance. They must not be relied on as any of those.
• A translation can be wrong. Do not use one for anything binding without a human check.

You are responsible for what you do with the text the app produces.

Margo is a journal with a companion that asks questions. It is not a medical, mental health, or therapy service, and it is not an emergency service. Nothing it writes is diagnosis, treatment, or professional advice, and it must not be used in place of any of those.

If an entry speaks of self-harm or crisis, Margo answers with care and points to a directory of helplines at findahelpline.com. That directory is run by others, and Burrow Studio does not control the services listed in it. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency number now.

Your entries, to-dos, creations, and weekly letters are stored on your phone. If iCloud is on for your iPhone, they also sync through your own private iCloud database, which is how the journal follows you to a new phone. Whether that works depends on your iCloud account and settings, such as being signed in and having storage available, and on Apple’s service. Burrow Studio does not hold a copy.

Recordings never sync. They stay on the phone they were made on. If you delete the app, reset or lose the device, or a restore fails, anything that did not reach your iCloud is gone, and Burrow Studio has no way to recover it, regardless of whether you pay for Plus.

If something matters, export it. The app can copy an entry or export your whole journal as markdown at any time.

Parts of Margo depend on services run by other companies, which are named on the privacy page. Those services can be slow or unavailable, which means writing up an entry can fail temporarily, and iCloud sync runs on Apple’s schedule, not Burrow Studio’s. The app is provided as it is, without a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

Features can change. Burrow Studio may add, alter, or remove features over time. If a change materially reduces what a paid subscription gives you, you can cancel through Apple.

To the fullest extent the law allows, Burrow Studio is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential loss, for lost profits or lost opportunities, or for lost or corrupted content, including entries or recordings lost because they were not synced or exported.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for Margo in the twelve months before the claim, or if you paid nothing, to nothing.

Nothing here removes rights you have under consumer law that cannot be signed away. If you are a consumer in the EU, the UK, or another place with mandatory consumer protections, those protections still apply.

Apple is not a party to these terms and has no responsibility for Margo. Apple has no obligation to provide support for it. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. Maintenance, support, and any warranty claim are the responsibility of Burrow Studio, and you should raise them through the support page.

You can end this agreement at any time by deleting your account and removing the app. Cancel any subscription with Apple separately. Burrow Studio can suspend or close an account that breaks the acceptable use rules above. The sections on liability, on AI-generated text, on what Margo is not, and on where your journal is kept survive the end of the agreement.

These terms can change. When they do, the date at the top of the page changes. Continuing to use Margo after that means the new terms apply. If you do not agree to a change, stop using the app and cancel any subscription.
